Rose Hagan was appointed head of Friends Select School in July 1995 and retired from Friends Select in June 2016 after 21 years.
Major projects completed during her tenure include completion of two capital campaigns, reconstruction of the school’s rooftop and rooftop athletic surface; renovation of the lower level for athletics, including fitness facilities; creation of lower school facilities for library, science, art and strings; creation of facilities for middle school physics and greenhouse; renovation of kitchen and dining facilities; and installation of an elevator. Program development during her tenure include InterSession, international studies, ESL, Mandarin, additional sports, such as crew, girls soccer and cross country; and most appropriately for a school on the Parkway in Philadelphia, longstanding academic partnerships with neighboring Center City organizations, such as the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
For 10 years, Rose oversaw the Friends Select/Joseph Fox Bookshop Author Series with Michael Fox ’70, which brought more than 150 nationally acclaimed writers to Friends Select, such as Alice Walker, Al Gore, Martha Grimes, David Halberstam and Junot Diaz.
Rose was a founding member of the Parkway Council, and has served on the board of the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS) and is a former president of the PAIS Commission on Accreditation. Rose also served as a member of the board of the Friends Council on Education (FCE), and is presently a member of the FCE’s development and membership committees. Also, she is presently vice-present of the board of Greene Towne Montessori School and chairs its governance committee.
Rose was for eight years the principal at Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, and prior to that the dean of studies at Mary Institute in St. Louis. She holds a BA in English from Temple University and an MA in British Literature from Southern Illinois University.
A Philadelphia native, Rose lives in the Logan Square neighborhood in Center City. She has interest in serving schools in executive coaching, institutional systems and structures, and accreditation processes.
