Mindful Pioneers at Friends Select School
A unique 6-week Mindfulness course, specifically structured to engage Upper School students and Upper School faculty in collaborative learning, is underway for the Fall term at Friends Select School in Philadelphia. Learning mindfulness theory and practicing mindfulness techniques together, 8 students and 8 faculty are working toward the long-term goal of bringing their learning to the rest of the school community, and possibly, beyond!
The idea and process of faculty and students learning something new together and then working as a team to teach others is a real innovation in the field of mindfulness and in collaborative learning, as well as a system model that has huge implications for schools. The school’s psychologist, Natan Gottesman and Upper School administration co-designed this pioneering adventure with Dr. Irene McHenry, an educational consultant and seasoned mindfulness trainer for schools and organizations who is delivering the program. Support for the program is provided by Friends Council on Education and The Thomas Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation. The teaching-learning process, as well as the product, provides an inspirational best practice in service to both students and faculty in their continuous development as leaders in a system.
